Definition: Olericulture is the science of growing vegetables.

Classifications of Vegetable Farming:

  1. Kitchen or Nutrition Gardening:
    1. Growing vegetables on a small scale at households.
    2. Examples: Beans, Cabbage, Lady's Finger, Tomato, Brinjal, Carrot, Spinach, etc.
  2. Commercial Gardening:
    1. Production of vegetables on a large scale to be sold in markets.
  3. Vegetable Forcing:
    1. Growing vegetables in buildings, greenhouses, cold farms, or under other artificial growing conditions.
    2. Most intensive type of vegetable growing.
    3. Examples: Cabbage, Tomato, Brinjal, etc.

  2. India ranks first in the world for the production of potatoes and lady's fingers.
